Transitioning from summer vacation fun to busy fall schedules

It’s a catch-22 among moms across the nation. We adore love the lazy, hazy days of summer – and all of the vacations and outdoor fun that come with three months off of school. However, we also appreciate when September rolls around and the kids are fully occupied for more than six hours a day. As much as we love not having to make lunches, sign permission slips and get kiddos to the bus on time from June to August, there is a sense of relief (admit it!) when that school bell rings again in the fall.

Chicago in the Spring and Summer

Chicago in the Spring and Summer

Throw off those winter coats! Spring has sprung in urban centers throughout the United States – including Chicago, Illinois, a favorite family vacation destination all year round. But this city especially shines in the warm-weather months since it borders Lake Michigan, where you’ll find 33 beaches along 26 miles of lakefront. If it’s too chilly to swim, canoe or kayak in early spring, you can still enjoy a brisk walk along the lakefront paths or admire the boats on the water. Rent bicycles from Bike & Roll at Navy Pier to enjoy the recreation paths on two wheels – truly great fun for the whole family! Read More >

Book festivals for kids in the United States

April brought International Children’s Book Day this weekend – April 2, to be exact. That’s Hans Christian Anderson’s birthday, and since 1967, reading enthusiasts have honored beloved children’s stories – like his “The Little Mermaid” and “Thumbelina” — across the world on this date.

But celebrations of good children’s literature actually occur throughout the year in various places around the country. These events typically include book vendors, storytelling, arts-and-crafts, food and entertainment; typically admission is free or for a nominal fee.

Consider popping in on these festivals with your children if your travels take you to these U.S. destinations this year:
