Stretching Your Hotel Budget over the Holidays
Family vacations create a lifetime of memories, and usually bring parents and children closer together. No doubt about it, a great trip is worth the expense. In economically worrisome times, though, that expense is a big concern.

Rather than completely cut travel from our budgets families can find creative ways to save money during their hotel stays; we can have our cake and eat it, too. There are nearly always great hotel deals to be found with a little research (Tip: call the hotel directly), but once we’re in those hotels, how can we continue to save money in our travel budget?
Inquire — Nicely — About a Free Upgrade
Now, chances are that if we’re staying at a hotel during peak travel seasons (such as Christmas), those upgrades won’t be available. However, if we’re taking a vacation during a less popular travel time, well, hey — can’t hurt to ask. If a larger room with a better view on a higher floor is sitting empty regardless, and if the person working check-in is in a good mood, that free upgrade could be had.
Ask the Front Desk if the Rate Being Charged is the Lowest Possible Rate
Again, it can’t hurt to ask. There are often club discounts that may not have been taken into account when booking the hotel room, after all, and there may be unadvertised special rates as well.

Order Off the Kids’ Menu
Sure, a lot of hotel children’s menus are limited to burger and fries, but we’ve been seeing more and more healthy options on kiddie menus recently. Plus, there’s nothing wrong with a burger and fries! Items off the kids’ menus are always cheaper than are adult entrees.
Does the hotel have welcome receptions? Or even a welcoming plate of fresh cookies? Letting our kids have a couple treats will give them between-meals energy, and no one usually minds if kids take a few extra cookies. This doesn’t save a whole lot of money, but hey — it’s something.
Some Hotels Charge for Wi-Fi, Some Don’t
When we really need to go online, though, the hotel may waive the daily Internet fee. Again, ask nicely, and make a point of noting that it’s needed for work purposes (if true).
It bears repeating that online research is the best way to find seasonal hotel deals and packages. One example of a terrific way to save money on a hotel stay is through the “Homewood for the Holidays” Sweepstakes promotion. In this, guests staying at Homewood Suites save 15% on weekend stays from November 1, 2009 through the end of January 2010 — and have a chance to win one of five $1,000 Visa gift cards. Fifteen percent off a hotel stay, plus the possibility of winning a generous gift card…talk about saving money on a family vacation!
