Tips for Healthy Eating on the Road

BY Lisa McElroy of suiteliving.com

One thing is true about traveling with kids: they’ll eat any junk they can find. Think about your last trip: How many times did you hit a fast food joint and chow down on fries, or inhale cotton candy in a theme park, or see how many hot dogs you could consume in under a minute? If your family’s like mine (and like most), the number may be higher than you’d like.

But traveling doesn’t mean that you have to abandon all of the healthy eating principles you hold dear, especially if you’re staying at Homewood Suites. Here are some tips for having fun while staying fit:

Take Advantage of Homewood’s Grocery Shopping Option

Bet you didn’t know that Homewood Suites will grocery shop for you! Just ask the front desk for a form, then fill it out with healthy snacks like individual milk boxes, green grapes, and cheese sticks all stuff you probably couldn’t bring from home. The staff at Homewood will hit the market, then bill the groceries to your room.

Bring Your Kids’ Healthy Favorites with You

My kids love helping me fill snack sized plastic Ziplocs with whole grain fishy crackers, oat cereal, raisins, apple chips, and nuts. It’s our own form of trail mix try inventing your own! If your kids are more of the granola bar type, pack up some low-sugar, high protein options. In a pinch, you can even rely on mini-cans of fruit like pears or peaches. Most of these will last a long time in the car, and all but the fruit will make it through airport screening.

Don’t Forget the Water Bottles

Although you can’t take the water itself through airport security, the plastic bottles are A-OK. Fill them up on the other side, then throw in some sugar-free lemonade powder  you can buy individual packets in most supermarkets. Lemonade in a princess water bottle will keep even the most persuasive kid from begging for soda, and it’s a lot cheaper, too.

Research Dining Options Ahead of Time

When kids are hungry, it’s easiest to head to the first restaurant you see, even if it’s known for high-fat, low nutrition meals. Your Homewood staff should be able to recommend family friendly restaurants with fit-friendly menus within an easy driving radius.

Count on Homewood for Breakfast

Every Suite Start breakfast includes fruit, cereal, skim meal, and whole grain breads. Even better? The all-you-can-eat buffet will fill up even the hungriest kid.

Make Good Use of the Exercise Facility at Your Homewood

Every Homewood has some sort of rec room, and many have gyms and pools. A good game of Marco Polo will help your kids work up an appetite, giving you the opportunity to stuff some healthy grub in. When you’re exploring the area you’re visiting, walk as much as possible, and you’ll go home even healthier than you left.
