America’s Weirdest Tourist Attractions
Ah, America! The land of the free and the home of the…weird. Where else can you road trip to the SPAM Museum or drive by the world’s largest ball of twine? While we wouldn’t necessarily recommend making any of these stops the focal point of your family vacation, you should definitely make a detour if you’re in the area.

Carhenge
What: An automotive replica of Stonehenge
Where: Alliance, Nebraska
If you’re looking for proof that Americans are wacky and inventive, look no further than this faithful automotive reproduction of the most famous stone circle in the world. It takes a lot more time to get to it than to see it, much like the original.
The Toilet Seat Art Museum
What: Toilet seats, lots of them
Where: San Antonio, Texas
Retired master plumber and amateur painter Barney Smith has been collecting and decorating toilet seats and hanging them in his oversized garage for over thirty years. The result? The largest private collection of painted toilet seats in the world. Maybe the only collection of painted toilet seats in the world.

Museum of Pez Memorabilia
What: A collection that got out of control
Where: Burlingame, California
A comprehensive collection of Pez dispensers including an example of every one ever made. Don’t miss the world’s largest Pez dispenser either, an almost 8-foot-tall smiling snowman.
The SPAM Museum
What: An homage to the world’s most beloved processed meat
Where: Austin, Minnesota
Have you ever wondered about the history of SPAM? Have you been wanting to sample bacon SPAM, garlic SPAM, and honey-flavored SPAM? Me neither. But hey, the admission is free, so why not?

World’s Largest Twine Ball
What: A really big ball of string
Where: Darwin, Minnesota
For reasons that are lost to time, a man named Francis Johnson began rolling a ball of twine in his basement in 1950 and didn’t stop until 1979 when the thing weighed almost nine tons. If that’s not worth a detour, I don’t know what is.
Enchanted Highway
What: World’s Largest Metal Sculptures
Where: Off Interstate 90, between Gladstone and Regent, North Dakota
Nothing breaks the monotony of a long road trip like enormous roadside statues, and this series of seven enormous sculptures in North Dakota by self-taught artist Gary Greff do it better than most. There are fish, pheasants, grasshoppers and more for your sightseeing pleasure. Don’t miss the gift shop either.

What does it say about me that I’ve been to four of these?
A minor correction–The Enchanted Highway is off North Dakota’s I-94. I-90 runs through South Dakota, where you can visit Wall Drug and the Corn Palace. Perhaps just as zany!
Thanks, for the correction Linda! Which out of the four did you like the most?
