Finding the best Columbus Day deals
With fall already in full swing and many of our travel schedules starting to wind down, now’s a great time to look at your annual travel (and paid time off) budget to see whether one last jaunt out of your home territory can fit into the picture.
Fun fact: Realizing that I had four days of PTO remaining for the year, I snagged a dirt cheap ticket to India last week and will be spending a wonderful long weekend in Bombay this November. The absolute best use of my hard earned money? Maybe or maybe not. But the best use of my time away from work? You bet.
Ready for some Columbus Day inspiration then? Great.
The first thing on your mind should be New England. It’s fall, the leaves are changing colors, the Patriots are destroying their opponents and there’s no better time on the planet to visit the American northeast.
Plus, here’s some great news: Boston has been on fancy-sale for the last couple of weeks, with round trip tickets under $150 from cities scattered across the East and Midwest. Just earlier today one of our fare alerts popped up showing a $109 weekend fare from Chicago to Boston, and at that price you can’t afford to not go.
Speaking of dirt cheap tickets, Costa Rica has recently been in the spotlight due to an uptick in competition to their west-coast airport, Liberia (LIR). We’ve been picking up fares as low as $250 from New York City and San Francisco down to the Central American country, which is nearly unheard of. Check both Liberia (LIR) and San Jose (SJO) to find the best price, but bear in mind: Liberia is in the northwest quadrant of the country, with great access to some of the coastal resorts and rainforests. If you want to head into the city or somewhere to the east, you want to fly into San Jose.
Competition on the Californian coast has also kept fares pretty low to and from Los Angeles and San Francisco. As we mentioned in last month’s deal roundup, Virgin America has come out punching by offering super cheap fares to their west coast cities, so make sure you keep them in your radar until competition lightens up.
While we’re on the topic of Virgin America, another one of their target cities, Dallas, has some hotly contested airfares, so look no further if you’re in the mood for some hearty Texas affection. Fares seem to be the cheapest from San Francisco and Los Angeles. Make sure that you look at the double mile promotions currently being offered by the legacy airlines if you want to cash in on some of the extra perks.
With fares dropping after high season, now is also a good time to explore flights to Europe. Though airlines have been pretty stingy with outstanding fare sales, ticket prices have dropped to a reasonable level in the last few weeks, and it’s not unheard of to get a ticket from the United States into Western Europe for around $700. Zurich, the clean and cosmopolitan metropolis in Switzerland, seems to be the epicenter of good deals this month, so start your search from there and then spiral out to the other big hubs in the continent, from London to Amsterdam to Paris to Frankfurt.
