Five Memorial Day weekend getaways

BY Scott Carmichael of gadling.com

To many, Memorial Day is when theme parks and other summer recreational fun start. To others, it is a time to commemorate U.S. soldiers who died in military service. No matter how you plan to spend your Memorial Day, always remember to take a few minutes to remember those that gave their lives while serving their country.

As the temperatures rise, Memorial Day is traditionally when we kick off the summer season. To enjoy the long weekend, we’ve collected five fun getaways with enough to do for the entire family.

St. Louis, MO

St. Louis is a highly underrated destination – and one that is relatively easy to reach from Chicago, Kansas City, Louisville, Memphis and more. The city has just the right amount of things to do for a quick weekend getaway. The Gateway Arch is of course a “must see”, even if you don’t feel like packing yourself inside one of its tiny elevators, just standing under the arch is a fantastic experience. Other attractions in the city include the St. Louis Zoo, Busch Stadium and of course the Anheuser-Busch brewery tour.

Closest Homewood Suites: St. Louis Galleria

Washington DC

Spending Memorial Day weekend in our capital is a very appropriate location. From the various DC area hotels, you are always close to major destinations like Arlington National Cemetery and the Washington Monument. Of course, there are also plenty of other things to do in the city as well – including the National Zoo and the Smithsonian.

The downtown area Homewood Suites is within walking distance of the DC Metro, which means you can park once, and enjoy the rest of your weekend without having to worry about your car. The Washington DC visitor’s site has a list of 100 free things to do when in town, be sure to check it out!

Boston, MA

Take a train, or make the long drive from New York or Connecticut to Boston, and you’ll find yourself in a destination with enough to do to for the entire weekend. If you are on the road with kids, consider the drive from Boston to Six Flags New England, or take them to the Boston Museum of Science or the New England Aquarium.

Closest Homewood Suites: Cambridge-Arlington

Galveston, TX

As temperatures climb into the upper 80’s, a trip to the beach suddenly doesn’t seem so out of the ordinary again. And if you plan to travel around the Houston area, a day in Galveston should definitely be on the schedule. This town is home to everything you need from a small island – historic homes, cheesy beach shops, good food and plenty of entertainment. If the weather doesn’t work with your plans, visit the indoor tropical sights at Moody Gardens, or if you need to cool down, consider the Schlitterbahn waterpark. Then, after a day of fun, head back to Houston and shop till your feet hurt at the Galleria – the Homewood Suites is within walking distance!

Closest Homewood Suites: Houston Galleria or Houston Clear-Lake

San Diego, CA

Staying at the San Diego Homewood Suites is a treat on its own – this property was recently awarded the TripAdvisor Travelers Choice award based off guest ratings. The hotel is located on the waterfront of Liberty Station, on the grounds of the historic Naval Training Center. Many attractions are within walking distance. One of the most popular destinations for kids in San Diego is LEGOLAND, about 40 miles up the coastal highway. If Lego isn’t your thing, you can also enjoy attractions like SeaWorld, the San Diego Zoo Safari Park or the shops in Downtown San Diego.
