Hidden beach gems in the U.S.

BY Scott Carmichael of gadling.com

When it comes to beach destinations, there is no shortage of fantastic locations. States like Florida and California are full of popular locations, and along the coast you are usually never too far from a big beach. Sadly, many of those are also packed during summer months, and not much can take the fun out of a day at the beach than having to walk for an hour to find a decent spot.

Thankfully, the country is also full of (slightly) lesser known beaches, and many of these hidden gems are also relatively quiet.

Chicago Oak Street Beach

“]No – Lake Michigan won’t offer the kind of waves you’d expect from the ocean, but the Chicago Oak Street Beach is also one of the few in the nation that can be reached within walking distance from the downtown area.

The beach is a fantastic place to hang out in the summer months, and a great sightseeing destination in spring and fall. Best of all, the beach is within walking distance of the Downtown Chicago Homewood Suites – one of the highest rated hotels in Chicago.

New Jersey – Sandy Hook

While wandering the streets of New York, could you imagine being just 30 minutes away from pristine beaches? Sandy Hook has everything you’d expect from a perfect beach destination – surfing, swimming, plenty of sand and a nice variety of beachfront dining. The beach experience is made even better thanks to the best way to get there – by ferry.

Sandbridge Beach, Virginia

If the usual beach crowds of Virginia are too much for you, consider making the drive up to Sandbridge Beach. Considered one of the more remote beaches, this community lacks a lot of the hustle and bustle of most beach towns. Bordered by a large naval base and nature preservation, Sandbridge Beach is a quaint family friendly destination.

Known more for its tranquil mix of wildlife and beaches, San Mateo County has over 50 miles of beaches. Driving down the coast takes you from busy beaches to some of the most ecologically important beaches in the country. The area is also home to one of the few beach locations where you’ll find seal and whale migrations.
