Spring Break Family Destinations in Florida – Besides Orlando
Families flock to Orlando during school vacation in the spring. With the weather typically not too hot and not too cold, it’s a great time to visit Walt Disney World and the other area theme parks. But there’s a whole state to explore beside the land of Mickey Mouse. Consider one of these three coastal locales for your family spring break:

Daytona Beach: I know what you’re thinking – this is home to the crazy college spring breakers. Why would I subject my kids to beer pong tournaments? But the city has discouraged the wild side of spring break in recent years, and activities here are family friendly. Consider outdoor activities like kayak tours, parasailing or deep-sea fishing. If you’re feeling energetic, climb the 203 steps to the top of the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse for nifty bird’s-eye views. Race car fans should check out the Daytona 500 experience, and if your children are into sea creatures, make a stop at the Marine Science Center.
Jacksonville: Fun stuff for kids in this northeast Florida city include the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens, with animals ranging from howler monkeys to giraffes to Komodo Dragons, and the Museum of Science & History, with loads of hands-on exhibits. Kids Kampus in downtown Jacksonville is a 10-acre play area featuring a small waterpark with water cannons and jets that spray when the weather warms up in mid-spring.

Panama City Beach: Head to this city in the Florida panhandle for its 27 miles of beach, the Greenway and Trails system of recreation trails (including a cool, 22-mile curving creek for canoeing), and Shell Island that’s part of pretty St. Andrew’s State Park. For man-made fun, kids dig the go-karts, Shipwreck Island Waterpark and Ripley’s Believe it or Not.
