Summer destinations that are great (and cheap) in fall and winter
Summer vacation has come and gone, but that doesn’t mean you can’t visit some of your favorite warm weather destinations. Throw a few sweaters into your suitcase and you can have a great (and in some cases cheap) time at these summer standbys in the fall and winter.
Orlando, Florida
Highlights: Less crowded theme parks and the Space Coast
Stay: Homewood Suites Orlando-International Drive/Convention Center
Even when it’s cold, Florida isn’t very frosty. When, if ever, you tire of the many theme parks in Orlando, take a trip out to the Space Coast to NASA’s Kennedy Space Center or take an alligator airboat ride through the swamp. There’s so much more to Orlando than Disney.
San Diego, California
Highlights: Mexican-flavored Old Town, the zoo, and the Birch Aquarium
Stay: Homewood Suites San Diego-Del Mar
The beach isn’t my favorite thing to do in San Diego by a long shot, so cold weather doesn’t slow me down a bit. I’d rather be checking out pandas at the San Diego Zoo, ogling sharks at the Birch Aquarium and devouring tacos (and washing them down with margaritas) in Old Town anyway. San Diego Wild Animal Park and SeaWorld are a lot of fun too, in any kind of weather.
San Antonio, Texas
Highlights: The Alamo, River Walk, and Hill Country
Stay: Homewood Suites San Antonio-Riverwalk/Downtown
Remember the Alamo in the off-season and you can skip all the mind-altering heat for which Texas is so justifiably famous. The River Walk is nice in the fall and winter and so is nearby Hill Country (though you’ll have to return in the spring if you want to see flowers blooming). You can also catch a Spurs game, go to SeaWorld or visit Natural Bridge Wildlife Park, which gives you an African safari without the hassle of going to Africa. Only in Texas!
Bozeman, Montana
Highlights: Yellowstone National Park
Stay: Homewood Suites Bozeman
You probably won’t do too much fly fishing and river rafting this time of year and it’s too early for skiing, but the galleries, museums and restaurants are all open for business in this historic Western town. Day trip to the gold rush town of Virginia City and learn about cowboy heritage at Grant-Kohrs Ranch. Don’t mind driving a little? West Yellowstone and its grizzlies, wolves, moose, and elk is just 80 miles away.
