Things to Do in Santa Fe with Kids

BY Kara Williams of thevacationgals.com

It’s been a couple years since I’ve been in Santa Fe, New Mexico, with my children, but that summer road trip ranks high among our favorite family vacations. I personally enjoyed snapping photos of quintessential adobe architecture, and we all filled our bellies with some fabulous food of the Southwest. Here are a few of my picks for great things to do in Santa Fe with kids:

bubbleSanta Fe Children’s Museum: My kids, then ages 5 and 7, could have spent the entire day in this museum filled with some great interactive exhibits. Building a tower of magnets, playing in huge bubbles created with a hula hoop, and making a snake out of recycled bottle caps were some of the highlights of our visit. The museum is out of town, so you’ll need a car to get there.

Santa Fe Farmer’s Market: This is the place to be on Saturday mornings year round, with a colorful array of vendors at the Railyard. Kids love visiting the booths for free food samples, and musicians and other performers help keep them entertained.

Santa Fe Railway: My son had passed his train-loving toddler stage by the time we visited Santa Fe, but if you’ve got kids who like to ride the rails, consider booking an excursion on the Santa Fe Railway, which offers day excursions into the high desert that are four hours long, round trip.

Bandalier National Monument: Technically, this national monument filled with cliff dwellings of the Ancestral Puebloans isn’t in Santa Fe (it’s about an hour away), but it’s a must visit if you are road-tripping in the area. My children enjoyed climbing up the ladders to explore the caves and archaeological sites. The visitor center lobby and bookstore has recently been refurbished; when we went, the informational exhibits there were quite good, and my children completed Jr. Ranger activity booklets to earn badges.

Santa Fe is also home to many art and history museums, like the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, the Palace of the Governors and the Museum of International Folk Art. For more details on these attractions and more, visit the Santa Fe Convention & Visitors Bureau website.
