Tulip Festivals Worth Checking Out with the Kids

BY Catherine Boley of trekaroo.com

Sweet Juniper is a blogger who I love. He writes candidly about many things, including the tulip festival he attends each year with his kids. He dubs his posts with the tagline, “If you ain’t Dutch, you ain’t much.” While few of us could pull off the pithy banter he brings to this annual event, many will enjoy Tulip Festivals and their celebration of all things Dutch.

Tulip season generally starts in April and continues blooming through much of May. Festival dates and times differ from area to area, so it’s best to research ahead of time.

Tulip Time Festival: Holland, MI – May 1st-May 8th. The name says it all, really! Aside from the gorgeous tulips, this large festival epitomizes all that’s great about Dutch culture. Traditional dances, costumes, music, and food are a huge hit here. There are also many child-centered activities and events that are great for the 12 and under crowd. Tickets need to be purchased in advance, especially for shows that are popular as they sell out quickly.

Pella Tulip Time: Pella, IA – May 6th-May 8th. Visit this historical village and learn about the rich history of Dutch settlers and early life in America. There is also a miniature village that features a mini railroad that circles the hand-crafted display. During Tulip Time, there are parades and events that kids of all ages will enjoy participating in, as well as many child specific activities. Thousands of local residents (and visitors, too!) dress up in traditional clothes and celebrate their heritage.

Tulip Festival of Albany: Albany, NY – May 8th-9th. For over 60 years, Albany has put on a huge Tulip Festival. This is a perfect place to celebrate Mother’s Day and enjoy the beautiful bounty of floral colors. Aside from the standard food and events there is also a ball as well as a competition for Albany Tulip Queen. The crowned queen takes a volunteer position to promote literacy and other community outreach initiatives.
