Cool Summer Activities to Help You Beat the Heat
Whether you’re taking a big family vacation or partaking in a dreaded staycation this summer, it’s a good idea to have a cool-off plan. What’s a cool-off plan? It’s a list of things you can do in case of a summer heat wave emergency.
Trust me, you don’t want to be the one making your own Slip N’ Slide out of garbage bags when the mercury rises. Here are a few things you can do instead to keep your cool.

Find a fountain
Cities are increasingly installing water play areas in parks and public spaces that you can use free of charge. We’re especially big fans of the interactive versions and rubberized surfaces to keep little feet and knees safe. To find one, try Googling the name of your town and the phrase “water play area”.
Go jump in a lake
Urban dwellers can be forgiven for forgetting that lakes and creeks are an option. If you’re traveling, use guide books and the internet to find local swimming holes that are suitable for kids.
Feeling a little more daring? Check out www.naturalwaterslides.com, a comprehensive listing of naturally occurring waterslides in rivers around the world. You haven’t lived until you’ve worn out your bathing suit sliding down water-smoothed rocks.
Try a theme park
Most theme parks have water play areas that cater to everyone from the smallest toddlers to the teen set. Park admission will obviously be expensive, but your kids will have a blast. If life jackets are available, it’s a very good idea to make all your kids wear them—even if they’re strong swimmers.
Rent a water slide
If your budget doesn’t stretch to a big family vacation this summer, consider renting an inflatable water slide or a dunk tank for a day or two to spice up your staycation. To really get your money’s worth, invite every kid in the neighborhood over and make a party out of it.
