Tips for Traveling with Pets
Pet owners planning a vacation have an important decision to make: hire someone to care for their furry friends or bring them along. Not every animal is well-suited to the joys of travel. Your parakeet, for example, would probably rather stay home. Your dog, not so much. Thinking of bringing your pet along? Here are a few tips to help the trip go smoothly.
If your pet won’t truly enjoy the trip, you’re probably better off leaving him at home. Don’t underestimate the amount of quality time you’ll be spending together either. Since you can’t take your pet into most shops and restaurants or leave him in a hotel room alone, you’ll be stuck together like glue.
Get a check up
No matter how you’re getting to your destination, it’s a good idea to take your pet to the vet for a checkup. Update those vaccinations and refill any medications you’ll need while you’re gone. Consider bringing a basic first aid kit if you’ll be in a particularly remote location.
Bring some ID
If your pet doesn’t have a microchip, get one. This is by far the most infallible method of recovering lost pets. Also, make sure your pet’s tag has your cell phone number on it, not your home number.
Pack the right stuff
No matter where you’re staying, you’ll want to bring all the comforts of home for your pet. Besides food, toys, a leash, and a bed, you’ll probably want a crate (for containment and security), sheets and towels (for protecting furniture), and a litter box or poop bags. It’s also a good idea to bring the number of an emergency veterinarian at your destination. As with most things, it’s better to have and not need it than need and not have it.
Find a hotel
Although it’s becoming easier and easier to find pet friendly accommodations across the country, don’t leave it until the last minute. Many Homewood Suites locations allow pets as well as other national chains. For other pet friendly hotel listings, try Pets Welcome and Trips with Pets. Be aware that some hotels may charge extra or require a deposit.
