Tips for Traveling with Toddlers

BY Lisa McElroy of suiteliving.com

Traveling during the winter months can definitely be unpredictable, and the same is true when it comes to traveling with toddlers. They’re cute, they’re fun, they grow up to be amazing people . . . but hitting the road with toddlers can be a challenge, to say the least. Talk about snow showers — toddler meltdowns can define the term.

But that’s no reason to stay at home! Even the most temperamental toddler can be a travel whiz — if you follow some tried-and-true toddler travel tips.

Travel While Your Toddler Sleeps

Consider leaving just before naptime, so that a long car trip won’t feel nearly so endless to your little one. Or hit the road just after work, stop at a fast-food playplace for dinner, let your kiddo get her sillies out, then change into her jammies and relish the ensuing peace and quiet.

Keep it Simple

If you’re visiting, say, Dallas, there’s more to do than the average toddler can handle during an entire toddlerhood. Prioritize — what would your child really enjoy? Pick one or two destinations or activities per day, and that’s it. There’s no pride in doing it all if no one’s happy at the end of the day.

Come Equipped

Homewood Suites can offer cribs, high chairs, even DVD players. But to have a happy toddler, you’ll need to bring along those special somethings that keep life running smoothly at home. Does your toddler have a favorite cup? Toss it in the bag. Does he love to watch “Handy Manny” over and over again? Sit him down in the living room of your Homewood Suites, pop in the DVD, and make yourself a cup of coffee when you’re all up much too early.

Keep to the Routine

Does your little one nap every day from 1-3? Don’t mess with success. Get an early Suite Start breakfast at Homewood, then hit the town early in the day so that you can fit in all of the sights before lunch. Consider a sandwich in your suite (complete with refrigerator and microwave), then get that kid to bed. Need a crib? Most Homewoods can provide one . . . just BYOT (Bring Your Own Toddler).

Introduce Lewis the Duck

The Suite Shop in your Homewood should have a copy of this fun-for-all children’s book about a duck who takes a long trip — and explains why new surroundings can be fun, not frightening.

Record It All for Posterity

The expression of delight on your toddler’s face when he sees his first amusement park, or caboose, or dinosaur footprint — I promise you, the photos will make you look back fondly on the terrible twos and threes.
