Vacation Souvenir Ideas
Trip souvenirs are part of vacation glory. The kitschy gift shops aren’t hard to find on vacation. The kids usually love exploring the whacky, and often cheaply made, toys imprinted with the destination’s name as the parents read the latest marketing slogan on cheesy t-shirts and shot glasses. Bringing home that little, or giant, trinket will always be a reminder of that special time away from home, but you may wonder how to avoid silly souvenirs and instead bring home authentic vacation reminders. Here are some souvenir ideas to consider for your next trip:

Go classic: Do you remember the silver spoons and rows of thimbles your grandmother had from her travels? These little collectables are still being sold. They are easy to pack, won’t break the bank and the kids will love starting their own collections.
Pressed pennies: Also called elongated pennies, squished pennies, squashed pennies and souvenir pennies, these tiny take-homes are probably one of the most inexpensive items you can purchase on the road and they make for a fun collection. Most machines cost 50 cents plus the penny to be pressed.
Postcards: A book of post cards is a fun way to remember your family trip without having to lug the camera everywhere you go.
Stay regional: If you feel the need to buy something “special” that you won’t find anywhere else, make sure the item is made in the area. Oftentimes items that look regionally authentic were actually made elsewhere. Local souvenirs can include crafts, foods and jewelry.
Scrapbook keepsakes: Takeout menus, stickers, swizzle sticks and ticket stubs can contribute to your memento collection.
Create your own: With the easy use of video recorders, turn the family’s memories into a movie. The family doesn’t have to be in all of the footage. Even a few seconds zooming in on the beach or the family’s favorite roller coaster ride can contribute to your home made movie. Recorded the good times (petting a dolphin) and the bad (lost in the middle of nowhere) for a good laugh later on. Nothing will remind the clan of their trip better than footage of the vacation.
